On 24th August 2017, the IPSAS Seminar on Research Findings 2017 was held at Mini Auditorium 1, the Office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), UPM. The purpose of the seminar was to provide a platform for IPSAS researchers to share their research findings with stakeholders besides strengthening the collaboration among the related government agencies. The seminar was attended by 88 participants including IPSAS graduate students, research associates, and representatives from the related government agencies such as the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Institute for Youth Research and Development (IYRES), Malaysian Youth Council, and Department of Social Welfare. Numerous novel research ideas in youth and community development were discussed and deliberated throughout the one-day seminar.
The seminar started off with a welcoming speech delivered by IPSAS Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asnarulkhadi Abu Samah. This was followed by a keynote address by Dr. Bahaman Abu Samah, a former IPSAS Director and a Professor at the Faculty of Educational Studies, UPM. He addressed the participants with the presentation on “Application of Statistical Analysis in Social Science Research”. Overall, 12 papers were presented based on the research findings carried out by the different researchers from IPSAS. The topics of the presentation include urban farming, adaptation to climate change among fishermen, cyberbullying, leadership in youth, community perception towards having a column on ‘race’ in government forms, the impact of social entrepreneurship and well-being.
In conclusion, this annual seminar received positive comments from the participants. It is hoped that the management of IPSAS will continue to organize this seminar in the coming years and more concerned parties (government and private agencies, community) will be invited to attend as well as participate in the paper presentation.
