Professionalism of Youth Work as the best medium for youth leaders to continue their service

The 71st General Meeting of the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) will be held on 7 March 2022. This meeting will see a contest for key positions. There are concerns among the existing leadership that there will be a suitable platform for them to continue their service. On them the soul of youth and their love for the sake of helping the existing youth is too deep. No, almost half their age is spent at the helm of Malaysia's major youth organisations. For those who come from youth affiliated bodies, whether they are aware or not, they have been prepared to become youth leaders at the national level since they first ventured into the association. This process of youth leadership actually takes place organically. The difference is do they get exposure, appropriate training and proper space throughout the process?

The diverse exposure and opportunities will make these youth leaders more resilient and mature in any challenges ahead. This includes the challenges of choosing a place that suits the potential and skills available to continue their contribution in helping the youths in highlighting the potential they have as much as they have gained before. In this context, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has provided a space and opportunity for the former youth leadership to continue to contribute. The Youth Work Professionalism Platform is the best platform for all parties to contribute in the context of youth potential development. It is across age, area of expertise, agency, religion and race. It is in line with the Malaysian Youth Policy (DBM) 2015 which is across ages and ministries to ensure a harmonious youth ecosystem. The efforts of KBS in strengthening this platform are clearly demonstrated when a National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) is developed in line with the existence of Youth Work Professionalism.

With the availability of NOSS, each of those involved in developing youth as well as a conducive youth ecosystem will be given relevant training to a higher level and awarded for their achievements. Such training and recognition is important and must be done to ensure the integrity and quality of the youth workers produced and not quoted later in life. The fact is, there are several platforms of potential and experienced youth workers out there, for example; The Youth Work Federation, Skilled Youth, Adab Youth Garage (IYG) simply mentions a few names but they do not have the relevant academic qualifications and accreditation from the relevant parties. Thus, with the availability of NOSS related to Youth Work Professionalism, a module and work that is structured in maintaining quality, integrity and recognition to those involved can be created and ensure a professional youth work ecosystem. It can also produce youth workers who are more sensitive and responsible with the environment in which they are located.

The initiative of the establishment of NOSS in relation to youth workers is carried out with the involvement of various stakeholders and takes not a small amount of time. It also involves continuous adult-youth cooperation. This effort is made to create a career path that suits the tastes of the youth as well as to gain government recognition and it is hoped that it will attract many young people as well as those who are interested in assisting in youth development programmes to engage with this career more seriously. However, in the opinion of the authors, there are many such programmes and initiatives that are implemented by the government including KBS, but do not receive a response due to information that does not reach the target group. This in turn reinforces the good efforts that have been made and creates a negative perception of the effort. Therefore, relevant information and initiatives are necessary and must be disseminated throughout the country so that those involved can take this golden opportunity to improve their skills and qualities as well as experience in the development of existing youth. This medium is also seen as being able to address the issue of fatigue for those who are still looking for direction after years of turmoil as well as contributing to developing the youth potential in youth organizations such as MBM. This initiative is also expected to open their eyes to the opportunities and space provided as well as open the eyes of the relevant parties to support this noble ambition to continue to succeed.

It should also be noted that the Professionalism of Youth Work is not static, it is dynamic and needs to be improved from time to time. With that, not only the training modules but the memberships, the panels involved as well as the award concepts highlighted will always be improved. This will indirectly improve the quality, credibility and visibility of youth workers in the eyes of the community. Only employees with integrity and skills will be able to increase the influence of youth workers in positive youth development. It is hoped that more youth leaders, especially from MBM, have responded to this initiative to be taken to a higher level and to improve the youth work profession in the world.
