UPM SERDANG, 7 April 2023 – The FB Live series of the Institute of Social Science Studies, UPM continued with the topic 'Health Issues during Ramadan and Healthcare', featuring two panelists, Prof. Dr. Barakatun Nisak Mohd Yusof, Associate Researcher of IPSAS and Dr. Mohd Fyzal Bahrudin, Physician from Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, UPM. This session discussed several health issues faced by patients who come for treatment at HSAAS, UPM during the month of Ramadan, especially diabetics. Among the problems faced include hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia dehydration, thrombosis, stroke, and heart attack.
The panelists also explained the appropriate time to perform a blood sugar level check. In addition, what IS more important that the panelists shared are tips to control what is eaten during the fasting month, which is 1) control the amount of carbohydrates and make them balanced, 2) break fast with dates and first eat vegetables and end with carbohydrates, 3) adequate water intake, 4) less salty foods, 5) reduce foods that have caffeine especially during sahur, and 6) reduce sugary foods, which can be used as a guide for all participants, not just for individuals with diabetic.
